“[Graphic Design is] an ongoing examination/conversation between the dynamics of personal exploration and professional practice” – Matt Owens, Volume one.

In a professional context your individuality and effectiveness as a designer will be measured by the skills you have and more importantly how you apply them. You are viewed through your work, its personality, its tone of voice and creative concerns.

This Brief offers you the opportunity to identify, develop and exploit your own individual design identity within the context of contemporary Graphic Design practice. You will be encouraged to make independent choices regarding the focus of your investigation and appropriate resolution of your ideas.

MY 5 CHOSEN BRIEFS

BRIEF 1

Greenpeace is calling designers, tinkerers, inventors, students of all fields from all over the world, to join forces and design a breakthrough design: a renewable energy powered and portable water pump that can provide a viable alternative to diesel-driven ones.

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

WHY DID I CHOSE THIS BRIEF?

This brief first caught my eye because of the green peace title , it instantly makes you think of good. I wanted to get involved before i had even read the brief. I think i would particularly like to get involved with this brief because its different to any live project i have ever looked at, the purpose behind it is to raise awareness by designing a water pump for an economic dilemma. I feel as though designing something to help a greater cause will be even more beneficial than just designing in general.

BRIEF 2

The Type Directors Club is the leading international organization whose purpose is to support excellence in typography, both in print and on screen. Through our annual competition and exhibition and frequent salons and workshops, we hope to celebrate the current stars of the typographic field and educate its future leaders.

We now invites the submission of entries to our 60th annual Communication Design Competition and 17th annual Typeface Design Competition, the most highly-respected and selective competitions of typographic and typeface design from around the world.

This year’s communication design competition is being chaired by TDC board member Gail Anderson, and the annual and exhibition materials are being designed by the New York brand and experience design firm Collins.

Alongside our annual competitions, the TDC also awards very special members of our community, those that have devoted their lives making our world a more beautiful place through their amazing work by bestowing upon them our most prestigious award, the TDC Medal.

Through the TDC Scholarship and TDC Student Awards, we hope to encourage the typographic leaders of tomorrow.

Please note, the deadline for entries is December 13, 2013, but if you submit by the early bird deadline of Friday, November 1, you will receive a substantial discount on the entry fee. Late deadline is January 14, 2014.

Eligibility

Entries must have been produced or published during 2013. Submissions can be by anyone associated with the entry.

Prize

Winning submissions are displayed in seven exhibitions that travel the globe next year, and are also published in a beautiful hardbound annual, Typography 35.

WHY DID I CHOSE THIS BRIEF?

I really liked the look of this brief for type directors club i wanted to know more about TDC so i looked on there website it seemed really professional so i read some of the deliverables of the brief  , i liked the way that there was to sections to enter your work. You could either enter some communication design or you could enter Typeface design. I liked that there was an option to narrow your work down to a category. Although i really liked the look of this brief i was a little confused as there was no specifics for this brief not very many guidelines and i have learnt over the past year sometimes when your being independent for a certain brief or task its generally harder.

BRIEF 3

Hate corruption? Love design? Transparency International is launching an infographic competition on the topic of corruption in the UK.

We are particularly interested in infographics because the issue of corruption, while devastating and far reaching in its effects globally, can be hard to visualise.

As the UK chapter of Transparency International, we are particularly keen to communicate this better to the British public.

We want visualisations that will make people think or inspire a debate about the issue in the UK and the UK’s role in corruption and anti-corruption overseas. We’d love to see you use design to tell a visual story which will communicate these ideas to a variety of audiences.

WHY DID I CHOSE THIS BRIEF?

I specifically chose this brief because it was infographics and i found it would give my work more of a variation i think this brief would be good for me because the subject matter behind the brief is a strong topic and its important to try new things. I think the topic of corruption in the UK is a good brief to put into info graphics it makes people more visually aware and will help them understand.

BRIEF 4

It is very simple. We can no longer tolerate "bullfights" in the world, a show full of blood, violence and death, this will never be art.

Speak out! In LOS LEONES NO SON COMO LOS PINTAN® we want to show your talent manifesting against the torture of these animals. Create a BLT (Below the line) in order to raise awareness about this barbarity and continue eliminating bullfights in more countries. You can submit images or a video.

WHY DID I CHOSE THIS BRIEF?

I found this brief on talent house i am not to sure about it but like the green peace water pump it has a strong message behind it and its all about preventing the cruelty to animals, They want bull fighting stopped in more countries this brief would make people more aware. Its not an issue that i have heard of in the past but it would be something different to try , I find it really important to try new projects and briefs because once in the industry we will get set different tasks so i think it will be beneficial if we start now.

BRIEF 5
Want to be featured in one of the hottest night clubs in America? We are counting on you to come up with the design for our next mural, and are encouraging everyone to bust out their most creative ideas yet. The mural (82.5"h x 320.5"w) is the artistic spotlight of LAVO, situated directly behind the main DJ booth and main VIP section. Your artwork will be seen by hundreds of thousands of guests per year, and to some of the biggest celebrities in the world. The winner's design will enhance every guests experience.

The design does not need to be true to size, however please try scale appropriately (82.5"h x 320.5"w).

For any questions or inquiries, please email zack.perlman@taogroup.com.

WHY DID I CHOSE THIS BRIEF?

I found a brief to create a mural for a vegas nightclub i think this brief is really innovative and exciting i like going out and clubs to i think i would know the aesthetics of the place and would be able to create something fitting for this brief. I like the idea of this brief because i haven't see one similar. The fact its in vegas gives me the impression its very high end and expensive.

WHY DID I CHOSE THIS BRIEF?

This brief isn't actually live but i thought it looked really interesting , Its to create a new logo for an energy company. Im not particularly interested in energy companies but from reading the briefs and looking at there preferred logos type i could see that the entries were really minimalist and geometric. I think out of all the briefs that this one would suit me best and suit my design aesthetic.

I think this year is more about finding you as a designer and me doing live briefs will help define my design aesthetic more and even though i found this last brief more fitting for me i properly will have a different opinion at the end of the year.
